The attacks on September 11, 2001 made us feel horrified, scared and angry. But as a result of the senseless attacks, Americans found a renewed sense of patriotism. American flags began to fly not just from flagpoles, but they appeared in windows, on doors and vehicles.

Our nation embraced New York City and through all of the destruction, supported the City and praised their efforts to get through the horrible attack.

When Hurricane Isabel struck the eastern seaboard last week, it brought devastation to many areas of Virginia. It destroyed homes, businesses, and crops; brought down trees and power lines; and limited access to essentials such as food, water, ice and gasoline.

Just two days before Isabel hit Virginia I was in Iraq meeting with our troops. As I talked with our troops stationed there and listened to their individual stories of commitment and courage, I was so proud to be an American and so proud of each and every soldier.

As I watched and observed the talent, dedication and accomplishments of our local governments, and saw our communities pulling together as a result of the devastation caused by Hurricane Isabel, I was equally proud.

The war on terror is not over, but with the continued support of the great people of this nation, we will have more victories in the battles to come.

Reagan's unbounded compassion and wise counsel charted a course our nation continues to follow today and his fatherly leadership and gentle smile will long live in our nation's memory.

In the past week, we have seen the same collaborative efforts take place all across Virginia as we weathered this storm, and as we continue to recover.

I think we sometimes forget how vital our local officials, first responders, and public utility companies really are until a disaster like Hurricane Isabel occurs. We rely on them to keep us informed and safe in our communities.

We're talking about gangs that are across the country. If they were an army from a foreign country, they would be the sixth-largest army in the world.

Space exploration is important research to our economic and national defense, and America's space program is a symbol of our success as a scientifically and technologically advanced nation.

Over the past week, I traveled throughout the Fourth District - in a helicopter with the Army Corps of Engineers, and on-foot, assessing the damages that Hurricane Isabel left in her path.

I introduced legislation that makes it easier to prosecute terrorists who try to use chemical weapons or other weapons of mass destruction within the United States. I am hopeful that the Judiciary Committee will take action on this important legislation soon.

Many viewed New York City as highly intense, fast-paced, and cynical. But on September 11, we saw a city that pulled together in a time of crisis.

The number of federal air marshals has been increased by 5,000 to respond to potential terrorist threats or attacks on commercial flights.

The one thing I said over and over again was how proud I was of each and every one of the 18 localities within the Fourth Congressional District. Their tireless efforts, long days and nights, and constant attention to the needs of their residents, should not go unnoticed.

I visited the Pentagon a few days after September 11, and I still remember so vividly the smell of terror surrounding the entire building and complex. I was angry that such a brutal act of violence was committed against innocent people.

We grieved with each other two years ago for the loss of our loved ones, friends, neighbors, co-workers and so many others who perished.

I will continue to work with my colleagues to find ways to help families deal with the rising cost of health care; to keep our families, schools and churches strong with values and integrity; and to continue my number one priority of protecting the American people.

As Americans, we have always had a strong willingness to stand hand in hand when times are tough. We must continue to show our patriotism for our great nation, and show the world that America will not stand for terrorism.
