I had that flying wheel tattooed on my forehead and on my butt.

A series of rumors about my attitude, as well as derogatory remarks about myself and my family showed me that the personal resentment of the Detroit general manager toward me would make it impossible for me to continue playing hockey in Detroit.

The home opener that year was the game I'll never forget. When I skated out for the game, I got the biggest ovation I had ever heard.

Starting that union was something I believed in very strongly.

With that kind of pregame build up, I couldn't let the fans down. I was pretty pumped up when the game started. It felt like old times again. The fans cheering us on, the sights and smells of the arena - I even got into a fight with Tim Horton. And, I drew a 10-minute misconduct.

What you had at the time was a dictatorship with the team owners.

Detroit Red Wings fans have a reputation for supporting their team, but on this night they were outdoing themselves.

But a funny thing happened four years later. I was invited to play for an alumni team against the Red Wings.

There was a lot of water under the bridge, but as the ovation built, that water was drying up. As they continued to cheer - it seemed like they kept going for 10 minutes - it made me feel like maybe I did something right. It was very humbling.

My penalty for rocking the boat was being traded.

I liked playing in Chicago, and I gave them everything I had, but I knew in my heart I was a Red Wing.

I watch a lot of hockey. There are some good hockey players and there are some awfully stupid hockey players.

Some nights, I was so good that I could have become an egotist.

By 1946, I knew Detroit was the best hockey city in the Original Six.

I first arrived at Red Wings camp in 1944-45 as a peach-fuzz faced kid.

Looking back, I've never had one regret.

One problem was that players didn't fraternize with guys on other teams, so getting them to join a union was going to be hard. But luckily some guys began to join and by 1957, we were in business.

The problem is there are too many teams.

First, Red Wings owner Jack Adams was angry that teammate Marty Pavelich and I went into the auto parts business during the offseason. Then, Adams was irate when I tried to start the first players association.

Unfortunately, we never won the suit and the union was disbanded the following year after the owners pressured numerous star players.
